Immunity NOW: Gut Health

COVID-19 is severely affecting those who have compromised immunity. Honest truth:  The majority of dysfunctional immune system cases are thanks to lifestyle choices and self-care neglect, not age or extreme illness. NOW is the time to take stock of your health and make needed changes. By having a strong immune system, you become part of the solution instead of the problem since COVID-19 only mildly affects strong and healthy individuals. If less people get sick because they are actually in exceptional health, we flatten the curve indefinitely. This is important because viruses will continue to come and go, mutate and change. Our only true insurance for health is to BE HEALTHIER!  Today is the first of 3 newsletters where I will be sharing Immunity Wisdom from Ayurveda. I hope you will take these to heart and apply this accessible knowledge in your own life. Immunity Wisdom Tip #1: YOUR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM IS THE SEAT OF YOUR IMMUNITY Western medicine just recently discovered this, but Ayurveda has known it for over 5,000 years. Our gut needs to host a healthy microbiome. The biome is supported by what we eat AND when we eat, in order to provide optimal immunity. Here are some tips from Ayurveda for supporting your immunity through gut health: 

  • Avoid snacking. Simply have 3 meals a day and at least 3 hours between meals. When you snack, you disperse and disrupt your digestive energy which weakens your immune system.

  • Eat/Drink nothing cold or raw. When you eat or drink anything cold or raw, your body has to use its energy reserves to heat it up before the food/drink can be digested and assimilated. When you eat and drink warm, cooked food/drink, you support your digestive strength and the body can use its energy elsewhere, like to fight viruses. 

  • Make lunch your biggest meal. The middle of the day is when the body can make the best use of your nutrient intake and digest it most efficiently. Bile production is at its peak for the day and you will make use of what you consume more effectively. 

  • Eat an earlier lighter dinner. Have your last meal by 6pm, make it vegetarian and light. If you have eaten a nourishing lunch, you won't need much for dinner. This allows digestion to complete before going to sleep and reduces the toxic load in the gut. If you do this consistently, you will find your weight normalizes. 

  • Cook from scratch, no processed foods, and mostly plants. Get rid of the chemicals, additives, flavorings, and packages. Make food from whole ingredients. Nourish yourself at the deepest level for optimal vitality. 

  • Gut health affects brain chemistry too. Having a good diet and healthy gut microbiome are key to maintaining a balanced emotional state which helps immunity too. 

  • If you are experiencing any ongoing digestive distress (gas, bloating, acid reflux, nausea, diarrhea, constipation) you have a compromised immune system because of your digestive imbalance.
