Heartbreak And Breaking Bread
Jan 13, 2025
It's devastating to hear about yet another natural disaster, this time it’s Los Angeles, in the form of dry wind and fire. My heart goes out to all those affected and my hope is for a more resilient rebuild and recovery. As these storms become more frequent and violent, it’s hard to dismiss that our living planet is out of balance. Acknowledging this, and treating her as an organism that we have to support, will always result in a more positive outcome for us all.
Approaching this support through the lens of Ayurveda makes more and more sense, the deeper our knowledge grows as we apply this ancient wisdom to modern times. Scientists, environmentalists, and city planners would be ahead of the game if they incorporated Ayurveda into their solutions and models for the future. So would we!
Let's start with some simple self-nourishment. As we approach the full moon in January, and we move through the winter and begin to yearn for the spring, we can look to the wisdom of Ayurveda to understand how to manage the cold of winter.
In order to stay healthy, we need to counteract (or balance) the environmental elements. The days may be wet or dry, but they will most likely be cold.
Soup is the perfect winter food for the following reasons: It is warm, it’s liquid, and it is made from foods that have been cooked together.
Warmth aids digestion so that our bodies don’t have to use energy to heat up cold foods before we can digest and assimilate them, which is especially hard when it is cold outside. And, foods that have been cooked together are kinder to digestion because they were already combined and have become harmonious before entering the body.
To learn more about seasonal alignment for naturally supporting your health, sign up for the Winter Women’s Wisdom Workshop happening on Zoom January 18th from 10am-12:30pm ET (recorded if you cannot be there live). Learn about seasonal imbalances and how to find balance during the coldest time of the year.
You can also find soup recipe and cooking inspiration in this link in my blog HERE.
And, you can make this new recipe I just created to have with your soup:
Squash & Pesto Almond Flour Bread
1 c. pureed butternut or delicata squash
¼ c. pesto (I make mine homemade in the summer without dairy and freeze it in ice cube trays)
2 large eggs
2 c. almond flour
¼ c. ground flax seeds
½ t. salt
¼ t garlic powder
½ t. baking soda
1 t. baking powder
¼ cup melted coconut oil or ghee
Sesame seeds for sprinkling on the top
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine all the dry ingredients together and separately combine all the wet ingredients together, then mix the two mixtures together. Put into a greased 8x8 or pie pan and bake for @ 45-55 minutes or until done all the way through.
I encourage you to share this soup and bread with friends and neighbors. Nourish those around you and see what grows from that generosity of high quality deliciousness.
I hope to see you on Saturday for the Winter Women's Wisdom Workshop. May we be filled with kindness toward each other and the Earth. There is a way for every part of this world to be nourished without depleting anyone or anything.
