What your tongue can tell you

As Spring approaches, it's time for us to do Spring Cleaning. That doesn't just mean clearing out your closets and going through the paper piles that have accumulated in the corners of your home. It also means that it's time to clean out your body. Time for a seasonal detox!

How do you know if you need a detox? One way to tell is to look at your tongue.

From the perspective of Ayurveda, the digestive system is seen as a snake with the tongue being the head of the snake and the anus being the tail. The tongue communicates a lot of information about what is going on inside your body that we cannot see.

If there is a coating, ridges, or cracks on the tongue, this is an indication that there are imbalances in the digestive tract. If left untreated, these imbalances can eventually manifest as more progressed disease states. This is why we detox twice a year (Spring and Autumn)!

Looking at the tongue each morning before anything happens in your mouth like brushing your teeth or drinking water, you can notice patterns of chronic imbalance as well as reflections of how you lived the day before.

If you had a late, heavier dinner, your tongue will be more coated. If you have long-held tension along your spine, you will see a crack down the middle of your tongue (that won't begin to change until you address stress in your life). Do you see a constant yellowish coating on your tongue, no matter what you do? That is indicative of too much heat in the digestive tract which is probably leading to loose stools or acid reflux.

Learning from your tongue might encourage you to take action to heal your insides so you can be happier and healthier inside AND outside. Wouldn't it be fabulous to know how to heal so you can feel (and see) vibrant health radiating from within?
