Solstice Sweetness
Dec 21, 2025
Today is that last night of Hanukkah and the actual Winter Solstice, the shortest day and the longest night of the year. I love that these two celebrations have aligned this year - we light the most candles on the longest night of the year. (My research revealed that this overlap happens roughly every 30 years. So, this year is extra special).
The longest night of the year invites us inward — to rest, to reflect, to listen.
Just as nature turns toward stillness and rest, may I invite you to honor this time by pausing, softening, and tending to our inner light?
Pausing is required so that growth can arise out of the intentional planting of our dreaming seeds.
When we live like we are always in perpetual Spring and Summer, our wells run dry and we burn out. This pause in Winter isn't optional. It is required for personal and planetary sustainability.
Winter Solstice marks both an ending and a beginning — the return of the sun, and the quiet reminder that even in darkness, renewal is already on its way. It feels to me like this threshold is the true New Year; it marks one solar year coming to a close, and the birth of the next solar.
Solstice gives us an opportunity for rest, stillness, and reflection before the continuation of the holiday season - Christmas, Kwanza, and New Year's expectations of social pressures galore.
Here are a few simple ways to honor the Winter Solstice:
- Wake before the sunrise and go outside for a walk as the dawn arrives.
- Give yourself a full body oil massage (abyanga)
- Do 5-10 Sun Salutations to honor the coming solar energy. Followed by a long Savasana to melt into the resting energy of solstice.
- Journal about your biggest growth moments of the past year and your intentions for the coming year.
- Celebrate yourself as you rest on the couch with a cup of tea or golden milk. Challenge yourself to not scroll, text, or fold laundry.
- Meditate or simply spend some time in silence without trying to achieve anything.
Let's send gratitude to all that has passed in the year we are completing, and cheers to the coming solar year!
