August - Ongoing Summer Support

Aug 03, 2025

August is here and we are seeing record heat index reports from all over the U.S.! This month the weather will shift into tinges of Autumn, but for most of us the summer flare will continue. Time to reconnect with our wisdom of balancing Pitta.

When the summer heat rises, it’s easy to feel physically overheated, restless, or irritable. In Ayurveda, this is a sign of excess Pitta dosha; the fiery energy in our body that governs metabolism, transformation, and intensity.

To stay balanced, here are some helpful reminders:

Focus on cooling, hydrating foods like melons, berries, grapes, cucumbers, zucchini, and leafy greens. Sip refreshing drinks like coconut water or herbal teas with mint, fennel, rose, or hibiscus.

Avoid spicy, fried, or overly acidic foods, as well as too much caffeine or alcohol, which increases internal heat.

Beyond food, calming your mind and emotions is key. Gentle yoga, meditation, and cooling breath work help release stress and soothe heat in the body. Swimming in cool water is such a soothing activity if you have access to the ocean, lakes, rivers, or even a pool. Even taking  a cool shower can be a game changer on a hot day, especially before bed.

Adjust your daily rhythm to avoid the hottest part of the day, stay in shaded or cool (not cold as that shocks the body and weakens the immune system) environments, and create simple routines that bring ease.

Massage your skin with coconut or sunflower oil, and use calming scents like rose, sandalwood, or jasmine to soothe your senses while letting go of excess intensity, perfectionism, and being overly focused on productivity.

If we get too out of balance with heat this time of year, we will carry it into the Autumn and it will create deeper seated imbalance through the winter, especially for perimenopausal and post menopausal women!

Small intentional shifts can make a big difference in how you feel during the season of heat. Feeling good is at your fingertips.
