It's May and the grass, as well as the greens in the garden, seem to be growing at least an inch overnight.
In southwestern Virginia, we are watching the waves of green creep up the mountains from the now lush valleys. There is a hopefulness that is inherent in this time of year - that abundance is inherent in each day as the days grow longer, and warmer, and greener.
Thank goddess (and goodness) for the reliability of nature amidst the uncertainty we seem to be swimming in otherwise. Doesn't it simply give you some sort of rootedness to know that the sun will rise and set at a predictable time tomorrow? Or that the spring flowers bloom in a succession: daffodils, then tulips, and then irises? And that all the spring greens growing right now are actually designed to cleanse the liver and give us a healthy chlorophyll boost?
Ayurveda teaches us that there is pattern and rhythm in everything, even what seems like chaos. When we align with the patterns, we create ease through elemental alignment.
As these patterns turn into ritualized habits, we are able to weather the uncertain times with greater resilience than we might otherwise.
One place to start, which is the gateway most people find with Ayurveda, is with food. Hypocrites famously said, "Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food."
Alternatively here is some sobering data that was recently shared by the Food Revolution Network:
Getting sick can be devastating.
In the United States…
Heart surgery can cost you $36,000 to $150,000.
A year of chemotherapy might set you back $48,000.
And if dementia strikes, the average cost of care is a staggering $287,038.
That’s not just hard on your body.
That’s hard on your family. Your future. Your savings.
Even if you have great health insurance — or government coverage — the financial toll of illness can be crushing.
But what many people don’t realize is that most of these chronic diseases are largely preventable. And the most powerful tool of prevention is your food.
We have healing at our fingertips every time we eat a meal, visit the grocery store or farmer's market, and every time we grow or wild harvest food.
And, there is more to this picture... it's honoring that simplicity matters; Simplicity in home cooked meals, in knowing what grows locally, and eating seasonally.
It's also honoring simplicity in a schedule that isn't pumping cortisol and adrenaline through our veins at the end of each day, or not cultivating time for the people we love the most. (For those of us in the menopausal transition, this is a reckoning that your body, mind, and spirit are begging you to pay attention to!)
There is no better time than today to befriend your body, create habits to support yourself as you age, and cultivate a vision for your future that is both inspired and empowered.
May we be nourished as we navigate personal, communal, and planetary evolution. May beings everywhere be safe, happy, and well.
