Preparing For Summer
May 25, 2025
As we move from the heaviness of Spring into the warmth of Summer, Ayurveda reminds us to shift with the season, not just in what we eat, but in how we care for ourselves. For those navigating the menopausal decades (40s-60s), this transition can often times feel more intense.
Summer is governed by Pitta dosha, composed of fire and water, bringing energy, clarity, and transformation, but also the risk of burnout, inflammation, and irritability if we do not stay grounded.
Perimenopausal and postmenopausal imbalances can become exacerbated with the increase of heat from the external environment. For instance, we may experience increased hot flashes, itchy ears, additional weight gain around the middle, irritated eyes, and more irritability when we are physically hot.
But, we don't have to simply put up with these expressions of Pitta imbalance! Here are a few tips to help support yourself as we move into the hotter months ahead.
- To stay balanced, begin your day with a warm (not hot, but yes, warm), hydrating drink made from 2-4 cups of warm water and a splash of lime juice. Add fennel seeds for an extra cooling effect that supports digestion and reduces internal heat, if you feel it building within you.
- Support your body with a daily oil massage using cooling coconut oil or try dry brushing to release excess heat if oiling feels too insulating.
- You can also practice Sheetali breath, a simple cooling pranayama, by inhaling through a rolled tongue or pursed lips and exhaling through the nose. This helps ease anxiety, irritability, and excess heat. It's your built-in, inner air-conditioning!
Ayurveda gently reminds us that we are nature, and when we live in rhythm with the natural seasons, we feel more like ourselves. These are just a few tips to get you started in aligning with how simple, daily acts can make a huge difference in your overall wellbeing during the transition into Summer. And when you're ready, there is always so much more to learn, if you desire to dive deeper.
May we be nourished as we navigate personal, communal, and planetary evolution. May beings everywhere be safe, happy, and well.
With love and light,
Hannah
